Quintessentially English - historic buildings, links with Capability Brown and glorious countryside. Slightly exotic - flamboyant, and loud, peacocks wander the streets. Independent minded – a quirky range of shops, plus award-winning food and drink. And occasionally a film set - Ross Poldark brooded his way around here... The Wiltshire market town of Corsham is something of a hidden treasure, and is just 10 miles from Bath.

Sengan-en is a stately home and landscape garden along the coast north of downtown Kagoshima, Japan. Built in 1658 as one of the residences of the powerful Shimadzu clan, the garden's most striking feature is its use of active volcano Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay as borrowed scenery. The subtropical gardens cover over 12 acres and include calming ponds, gently bubbling streams, mysterious shrines, a bamboo grove, and a mountain hiking trail. The gardens change with each season, from plum and cherry blossoms at the start of the year, through to peonies, irises, morning glories, and chrysanthemums. Experience the lifestyle of the Shimadzu, one of Japan’s most powerful clans, in the house visited by royalty such as Edward VIII and Nicholas II of Russia. The house features a fascinating mix of Japanese, Chinese and Western influences, showing the truly international nature of the Shimadzu clan. Follow the course of the Shimadzu family over 800 years, and see how the international relations they forged led to the development of industrialization in modern Japan at the Shoko Shuseikan Museum.

The Shoko Shuseikan Museum and Sengan-en were recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site related to Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution in 2015.

The “hidden garden” Qian Yuan is an authentic Chinese scholar’s garden within the Botanical Garden of the Ruhr University of Bochum, Germany, a gift from the Tongji University of Shanghai. Following oriental tradition, the garden is protected by a wall, with many openings to draw the surroundings in. Inside, a meandering path encircles a large pond, passing through a succession of pavilions and landscapes offering ever changing impressions. Plants, buildings, rocks, water and sky combine to create an enchanting place of repose, imbued with symbolism and intended as a miniature of the world within Chinese philosophy. The Chinese landlord would have relaxed here to meditate upon the harmony of man and nature, but even Westerners will find a charming, inspiring environment in which to escape the distractions of the world outside. This Chinese Garden was also inspired by the famous Legend of the Peach Blossom Spring, in which a fisherman accidentally discovers a hidden and elusive Paradise. This tale is engraved on a stone tablet and many of its elements are represented within the garden. The Chinese Garden is accessible during the opening hours of the Botanical Garden, 10 am to 6 pm (4 pm in the winter). Entry is free.

Filled with the spirit and character of Edith, Lady Londonderry, the gardens reveal the history, grandeur and enchantment of Mount Stewart, bringing it to life in the glorious celebration of people, power and plants. With imagination, colour and passion, Edith created a sanctuary for world renowned guests, a playground for children and a place alive with her spirit of adventure.

By emulating Edith, Lady Londonderry’s unique style of gardening, Mount Stewart delights and by using newly discovered plants and new cultivars and varieties, is contemporary. Scented plants will always find a place at Mount Stewart. Edith famously would not have a rose in the garden which did not carry a scent, but she also used Rhododendron and Oriental Lilies to make eaux de toilette and essential oils. The newly opened Rose Garden has been restored to Edith’s 1938 design and displays an array of scented Roses, Lilies and other scented plants, a further dimension to this individual garden. A visit to Mount Stewart truly is a tonic of the soul.

Gravetye Manor is a 4 red star hotel and 1 Michelin Star restaurant based in West Sussex. The 35 acre gardens include a formal Flower Garden, meadow and lake, orchard, Wild Garden and 1.5acre walled Kitchen Garden. This original Victorian Kitchen garden provides the Chefs with up to 95% of their fresh produce in the Summer months and is the main driving force behind the inspiration and seasonality of the menus served in our restaurant. Originally designed by famed pioneering Victorian gardener, William Robinson, the gardens are now Grade II listed and maintained by our Head Gardener, Tom Coward. Robinson lived at Gravetye Manor from 1884 and used the gardens to realise his ideas about more naturalised planting, something which challenged the regimented planting style which was prominent in Victorian gardening at the time. The gardens are available to all patrons of the hotel to visit but are not open to the general public. Please call the hotel to book before visiting. Our dress code for the restaurant is smart casual. Smart jeans are acceptable and in the evening most men do tend to wear a jacket. Children over seven years are welcome in our dining room.
